On the steep slope leading to the Bom Jesus Church above Braga you can use a 140 years old funicular. The particularity of this machine is that it moves people up and down without using any fossil energy, just water. The top carriage is filled with water from a spring and its sheer extra weight pulls the bottom carriage up as the top one goes down. You can’t find more eco friendly!
The city of Porto started using electric tramways from around 1900, and while many cities got rid of them and more recently reinvested in this non polluting form of public transports, Porto has kept them in use until now.
Where would we be if the direction taken years ago through these technologies had been emphasized along the twentieth century?
